Connecting teachers to the minerals industry at Leaton

Connecting teachers to the minerals industry at Leaton

At our Leaton Quarry we hosted a Teacher Encounter day to provide a group of local teachers with an insight into careers pathways within the aggregates industry and an understanding of how it can be linked to curriculum delivery.

Challenge

While Breedon has a successful apprenticeship programme, we are always  exploring innovative ways to inspire and attract the next generation to the sector.

Teachers play a crucial role in helping young people navigate the wide range of opportunities in today’s world of work. In July 2024, Breedon’s Leaton Quarry was delighted to host a Teacher Encounters session, providing teachers with an in-depth look at the diverse career paths within our industry.

The Teacher Encounters programme is designed to boost teachers’ confidence and knowledge about the opportunities available in today’s job market. It offers a unique chance for teachers to engage directly with employers, explore how their subjects are applied in real-world settings, and gain insight into various career pathways.

Solution

The session was facilitated by the Marches Careers Hub in partnership with Shropshire County Council. Careers Hubs bring together schools, colleges, employers, apprenticeship providers, and local authorities to improve how education providers prepare young people for future careers.

Throughout the day, teachers from local secondary schools met with colleagues from Breedon, including teams from Procurement, Energy, and Operations, as well as representatives from Minerals Matter, the education outreach arm of the MPA. Attendees were given a tour of Leaton Quarry, which showcased the area's unique geology and provided insight into the variety of jobs available across the full product lifecycle. During the tour, colleagues shared valuable insights into their own roles and career journeys, as well as discussing the broader skills needed in the industry. Teachers also had the opportunity to connect with our apprentices, learning about the transition from education to sustainable employment in the minerals industry.

Impact

Through connecting directly with local schools, Breedon is proud to inspire and engage the next generation. The positive feedback from teachers underscores the value of the Teacher Encounters session and its impact on broadening students' career perspectives.

It's been incredible, and I think it really will benefit my practice, both in terms of the delivery of my subject but also with regards to the careers advice I can give within lessons.

Adam Briggs

Head of Geography, Charlton School

We've seen the variety of different roles within this job sector, and it’s been incredible to see the opportunities that our young people could have. There seems to be a job in this industry for absolutely everyone.

Jack Taylor

Careers Leader, Meole Brace School

The benefit of events like this for teachers is that it really helps them to understand how the world of work links directly to the curriculum areas they're teaching, whilst also garnishing relationships with employers to help them bring the subject area to life.
