Cambusmore Quarry, a sand and gravel quarry located in the Trossachs National Park, has been excavated and restored to become a thriving habitat for a diverse array of wildlife, including otters, pine martens, and several red-list bird species.
In 2023, we partnered with the Scottish Wildlife Trust and local volunteers to help plant reedbeds along Gart Pond, which sits at the heart of the site. In addition, during 2024, we have planted 10,000 trees at the site, helping to create 2.2 hectares of broadleaved woodland.
Cambusmore Quarry has been nominated for the MPA (Mineral Products Association) Biodiversity Awards Innovation category. This recognition highlights our efforts to improve biodiversity and innovative practices in environmental conservation.
Powmyre Quarry is located near Kirriemuir in Angus. The quarry extracts sand and gravel with progressive restoration back to agricultural land, also encompassing a water body and associated wetlands. At Powmyre Quarry, the focus has been on creating larger, more enhanced, and interconnected habitats. Our planned and completed restoration at the site contributes to wider conservation objectives outlined in the Tayside Biodiversity Action Plan (2nd Edition 2016 – 2026).
Powmyre Quarry has been nominated for the MPA Biodiversity Awards Landscape Scale Restoration, recognising our efforts to enhance and connect habitats on a larger scale for improved biodiversity.
Our North Cave site and our Mullaghglass site have also both been shortlisted for the MPA Biodiversity Award ‘Planned Restoration’ category.
Mullaghglass is a closed landfill site located near Lisburn in County Antrim. The site borders the Slievenacloy Nature Reserve. The site’s Biodiversity Action Plan has been developed to ensure that the abundance of species and range of habitats within the site enhance local biodiversity and reduce habitat fragmentation by providing a wildlife corridor within the Belfast Hills. The site also produces green energy from landfill gas extraction and is used as a training centre for ornithologists.
