Part of Breedon’s head office in Derbyshire underwent a major refurbishment, part of which included the installation of new office furniture. Much of the old furniture was still in a perfect, useable condition, but required urgent removal as construction works were due to start imminently. The quickest and simplest solution would have been to recycle the furniture, most of which was made up of wooden and metal components.
Breedon looked to their suppliers to find a better solution than simply recycling the furniture. Derby Furniture Alliance (DFA), winners of Biffa’s Change Makers competition in June 2024, were approached to gauge their potential interest in taking some or all of the furniture and they were very happy to do so.
Working with Biffa’s internal facilities management team, a quick and effective solution for transporting the waste furniture items to DFA’s storage facility in Derby city centre was identified, and the movement was carried out in time for Breedon’s office construction work to commence as planned.
This material, which would have been recycled, was successfully reused, demonstrating a commitment from both Biffa and Breedon as a partnership to move potential “waste” as far up the Waste Hierarchy as possible.
There will also be a significant benefit to the local community in Derby, with all the items being redistributed to people within the city who might otherwise struggle to afford them.
We were delighted to take receipt of a large number of great condition items of office furniture. Five office chairs have already been delivered to a homeless hotel for their staff and a number of tables and cabinets are heading off to a support charity for refugees and disadvantaged groups. We will soon find good homes for the other items once we have allocated the items we need for our project. Thanks so much for making this happen with Biffa.
